Earth Day Service Project
The theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in our Planet.” We wanted to create an opportunity for our #FrontierFam to connect, give back and invest in our community this Earth Day.
On April 21, we will celebrate Earth Day one day early by helping a local community garden prepare for the next season. The small community garden at 1625 S. Alston Ave. works all year with North Carolina Central University and the surrounding community to grow organic food. The garden operates from a food sovereignty model. According to the U.S. Food Sovereignty Alliance, food sovereignty is “the right of peoples to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.” That said, the food grown at this garden gets distributed back to the local community.
For our Earth Day Service Project with the garden, you will have the opportunity to work in groups to prepare vegetable beds for spring planting. Depending on the attendee turnout, we may also have some groups help move mulch and do some weeding. We will also have lunch available to grab while you work!
Please plan to wear closed toe shoes and wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty!
