Now that The Frontier has been open for a whole year, we are working to ramp up our arts programming across the space. The Frontier has found so much success because of the divergent and creative thinking that we find in our pioneers, squatters, and staff. That being said there has not been much art generated or displayed in The Frontier, but that’s all about the change. Keep reading to see what we have in store throughout the next couple of months!

First Annual RTP Employee Art Exhibit:
From February 11-March 11 artwork from RTP employees will be displayed in the Atrium of The Frontier. We know our scientists and techies are creative in the lab and behind the computer screen, but many of them also creative on canvas, through the camera’s lens, and even through fiber. We are so excited to celebrate this creativity. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, February 11 from 6:00-8:00 with a juror lecture and winners announced by Dr. Lawrence Wheeler of NCMA. It is open to the public and free, but please RSVP here.

Open Walls:
Open Walls is a program organized by The Frontier and Triangle ArtWorks, where Triangle-based art galleries, guilds, collectives and organizations are provided free access to wall space in The Frontier. This space can be used for display of art. The intended effects are two-fold: 1) Connect artists and patrons in order to increase the amount of art sales in the region – every sale counts! 2) Let it be known that The Frontier is a place where creative and artistic thinking is not only encouraged but expected. We want people to feel creativity oozing through The Frontier when they come here for a meeting, event or simply to work. For more information about the application process please follow this link.

Coloring Sessions on The Bridge:
Each Wednesday from 11:00-12:00 on The Bridge at The Frontier, there will be colored pencils, crayons, tables wrapped in paper and coloring books for you to let your creative juices flow. Coloring takes us back to a time when we were kids – when we could be fully present and content in a moment without everyday to-dos weighing down on us. It’s a great way to step away from your work for a moment and release some endorphins and oxytocin. Click here for the event posting.

The Frontier Collection:
The Frontier staff has acquired a few pieces of art that are currently on display, but we are on the search for more art that tells the story of The Frontier and RTP. This new collection will explore the themes of awe, curiosity and wonder. To do something great, one must be in awe of the beauty in the world around them, curious to discover more and full of wonder to imagine what the world could be. The aim of The Frontier Collection will be to inspire those who come to space, so that they can create something of their own.
