Company: Skull+Handlebarskull and handlebar pic

Mastermind: Josh Grossmann

Q: Give me a 3-sentence elevator pitch about your business.
A: Skull+Handlebar creates all natural grooming products for men. Dan and I are both engineers who have spent countless hours honing the formulations of our products in order to yield the finest experiences possible.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your business?
A: I was lamenting the lack of all-natural shaving products that also had a masculine smell to them. Dan asked, “Why don’t we just make our own?” And now here we are.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration?
A: We’re big on the scientific method and lab testing. Because the sense of smell is a big key for memory, we try to recreate aromas that bring back good experiences and put you in a relaxed state of mind.

Company: Lo & Behold

Mastermind: Elisabeth Chadbourne

Q: Give me a 3-sentence elevator pitch about your business.
A: Lo & Behold is a 100% natural body care company based in Durham, NC. We literally do not use any synthetic ingredients and every product is handmade in small batches. We use as many locally grown ingredients as possible and we partner with local non-profits and artists.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your business?
A: I have always been passionate about skincare and natural plant-based ingredients. I studied herbalism for years and finally started to make my own medicines from plants, then I started applying that knowledge to my own skincare formulas. This hobby turned into an obsession, which finally turned into a business.

Q: What is your celebratory dance move when you accomplish something great?
A: I do not have a dance move per se, but some awkward jumping around to Taylor Swift or Gloria Estefan is a pretty standard celebration.

A: I work as an artist full time.

Q: Where do you draw inspiration?
A: I am inspired by both wild and cultivated, my garden, my community, and my students.
