Did you know that there are so many fruits and vegetables that can actually create a natural dye? Join us for this session to learn the steps to take to make your own dye and create different patterns on your clothes as well. Since making natural dye takes a bit longer to render color, we won’t be able to finish this project in just a 30-minute session. We recommend taking out a bit more time after the workshop or at the end of the day to use the techniques we teach you in order to finish up your new outfit. The dyes will be a bit lighter than if we were to use paint since we are using fruits and vegetables and the longer you leave the cloth in the dye, the more vibrant the colors will be. No need to rush the process. We recommend having an adult help you with tie-dying since we will be boiling water and getting a bit messy! You will need: Water Salt White Vinegar Newspaper or plastic wrap (to cover counters) Gloves (so you don’t stain your hands) Bucket or large bowl (for dying) Pot to heat up water on the stove (create dye) Rubber bands White t-shirt, socks, pillowcase, or anything else you would like to dye (needs to be white) For your colors (we recommend picking two or three ingredients): Red / Pink: Pomegranates, beets, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, red and pink roses, avocado skins and seeds, lavender, red cabbage Orange: Carrots and carrot roots, orange peels, yellow onion skins Yellow: Lemon peels, celery leaves, turmeric, paprika, marigolds, sunflowers Green: Spinach, parsley, peppermint leaves, artichokes, savoy cabbage Blue / Purple: Blackberries, red cabbage, grapes, blueberries, red mulberries, hibiscus Brown: Dandelion roots, oak bark, walnut hulls, tea, coffee, acorns, onion skins Gray / Black: Blackberries, walnut hulls, iris root ABOUT Frontier Fam Creatives Join us (virtually) every other Tuesday at 11:30am for a 30-minute creative activity with the Frontier RTP staff.
