SUMMARY:On the Menu: CROSSING THE “VALLEY OF DEATH”: CAPITAL STRATEGY, TEAM BUILDING, AND ECOSYSTEM RESOURCES FOR EARLY-STAGE BIOTECH STARTUPS
DESCRIPTION:\nSession Description\nEarly-stage biotech and AgBio ventures face a uniquely demanding commercialization timeline defined by extended zero-revenue R&D phases, high technical risk, and rigorous regulatory requirements—a period widely known as the “Valley of Death.” Unlike software startups that can achieve early commercial traction with rapid product releases, life science ventures require millions of dollars to validate target biology, run proof-of-concept assays, and execute field trials long before making their first commercial sale.\nThis session provides early-stage founders and small business leaders with an actionable blueprint for surviving and thriving during this critical gap. While fundraising and capital architecture serve as the core foundation of the presentation, the talk also addresses three indispensable drivers of startup survival: assembling a high-caliber technical team, structuring corporate partnerships, and maximizing localized innovation resources in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) ecosystem.\n\nHere’s how it works\n\nWhat will be covered: Government funding applications, capital investment, and other programs\nKey questions addressed: How to apply for different funding sources to survive\nSkills attendees will sharpen: Finding resources, negotiation, resilience\n\nKey Takeaways\n\nCapital Strategy: Bridge the “Valley of Death” by layering non-dilutive grants (SBIR/STTR) with private equity to de-risk core platform technology, preserve founder equity, and systematically drive valuation step-ups before commercialization.\nHolistic Team Architecture: Scale execution beyond internal R&D by pairing scientific experts and business development talent with high-impact advisory boards, CROs, and strategic research partners.\nStrategic Alliances: Engage established corporate partners early through joint development and testing agreements to align product pipelines directly with market demand and establish clear exit pathways.\nRegional Ecosystem Advantage: Maximize localized resources—such as NCBiotech non-dilutive loans, shared wet-lab incubators, and RTP university talent pipelines—to lower capital requirements and accelerate time-to-market.\n\nSession Speaker\nJiarui Li, CEO at Innatrix ( https://www.innatrix.com/ )\nJiarui Li received MBA and Ph.D. in plant biology. Jiarui is an accomplished scientist and agtech industry leader. He worked in K-State as a Research Assistant Professor, and then worked in Bayer CropScience and Simplot as a scientist. Starting from 2020, Jiarui has been the CEO of Innatrix, developing eco-friendly biological products for crop protection. Till now, he has raised over $4 million in non-dilutive and capital funds, published over 30 peer-reviewed publications and 2 patents.\n\n\nGame Plan\n11:30 a.m. | In-Person | Check-In opens and lunch is available\n12:00 p.m. | Event begins\n1:00 p.m. | Go on back to work!\nWhat’s On The Menu?\nAt Frontier RTP, we are constantly growing and hope you will come along for the ride! We developed On the Menu as a way of helping you and your business grow to the next level, whatever that next level may be.\nEach month, we offer a lunchtime workshop on a special topic related to small businesses or startups. On the Menu is taught by a diverse group of experts from around the Triangle (some of whom started their business here at Frontier RTP!) in a small group setting. \nOur hope is that these workshops will not only be rich in content, but spark dialogue, start relationships, and make your lunch break meaningful. Did we mention there will be free lunch?\nWe want you to easily access our events. Please reach out to us with accommodation requests at programming@rtp.org ( mailto:programming@rtp.org ) and we’ll do our best to facilitate.\n\n \n \n \n \n \nNote: By registering and participating in this event, you consent to the recording of your likeness, image, and/or voice and authorize Frontier RTP to use photographs, video, and audio recordings containing your likeness, image, and/or voice in any medium for any purpose.\n
